(Show a calendar to the children)
Can you name the day that has been squared in red. It is Sunday. Sunday is also called the Sabbath Day. We are going to talk about what it means to keep the Sabbath Day holy. Have you ever heard that phrase before- Keep the Sabbath Day holy?
The fourth commandment says “Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy.” What does that mean?
This means that on Sundays we only do things that remind us of Heavenly Father and Jesus, such as going to church, reading the scriptures, saying our prayers, helping people, spending time with family and other reverent things that help us feel the spirit. Heavenly Father and Jesus have given us seven days in a week. They have asked us to dedicate one day each week (Sunday) to them and only do spiritual things on that day. After all that Heavenly Father and Jesus have done for us and given us, that doesn’t seem like a lot to ask, does it?
It is not easy to know whether an activity is something we should be doing on the Sabbath. Even adults have a hard time with this. If an activity helps you think about Jesus and is helping you be more like Him, then it is a good activity for Sunday. Going to church and being reverent, playing scripture games with your family, writing letters, visiting relatives, praying, reading scriptures, visiting the sick, helping mom cook dinner, watching church videos are all activities we can do on Sunday.
Activities that are not appropriate for the Sabbath are shopping, playing with friends, playing sports, going out to a restaurant, and even deep cleaning the house. I realize that everyone is different with their standards, but prophets have advised us not to do these things on the Sabbath.
We are going to play a game to test your knowledge on what are the best activities for the Sabbath. I have a BIG calendar here.
We will have two teams. One person from a team will come and draw a "Activity Card" from this bag underneath the calendar. The card will have an activity on it that that person must decide if they are going to act out the activity or draw the activity on the board for their team. Their team will try to identify what the activity is and whether or not they should do it on the Sabbath. If your team answers both you get one point for your team. Then a member can put the "Activity Card" on the big calendar. Here are some rules. Please listen to them and follow them or we can’t play the game.
Calendar was enlarged from enchantedlearning.com but could just google image blank calendar. "Remember the Sabbath Day" clipart is from Friend, Nov. 2004 http://www.lds.org/churchmagazines/11-2004-Friend/Nov2004Friend.pdf The "Sabbath day" title clipart is from "Sunday is a Special Day", Friend January 1985, sorry that I don't have a link! You could use "The Lord's Day" title from http://www.lds.org/churchmagazines/11-2004-Friend/Nov2004Friend.pdf |
1. The person acting or drawing the activity may not talk to their team guessing until after the activity has been drawn or acted. Teachers can help at any time if you don’t understand your activity and can help you guess!
2. The team guessing may not shout out any answer. They should whisper the answer to a teacher on their team. Then the teacher can raise her hand and answer for the team.
3. The person can use any member on his or her team to help with the acting. If you need two or more people to help make activity more clear. Only whisper to your teammate.
(Play the game until time ends. Try and get both teams to end up with the same amount of points)

Deletehow does the calander coincide with the pictionary. Do you just pick days to put the activity on based on sunday appropriate or not? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSorry for the confusionheIrs, after the kids guess the action on the activity card, I had a primary child select a spot on the calendar to help remember the date that they were going to "swim with Jake", etc. The calendar just serves as another visual in helping the children understand that there are six days out of the week that they could go swim with a friend. So as long as they don't put that activity card on a Sunday, I know that they understand. Just another way to reinforce the concept, I guess! Games can be tricky because sometimes the children may get caught up in the game and lose sight of the important content.
ReplyDeleteOh and there are two sets of the "Sunday Appropriate" Activity cards like "reading scriptures" and "reading Ensign" because you can do these things on Sunday AND the other days of the week.So I put an additional one on the calendar to represent that we don't just do these things on Sunday. Feel free to create more activity cards if necesssary.
