When I take the Sacrament I renew my baptismal covenants Sharing time

I Make Promises with my Heavenly Father at Baptism Sharing time
June 2013 Week 3
"When I Take the Sacrament, I Renew my Baptismal Covenants"

Tell Three Bears of Baptism story.(could draw the story and make a book or use objects with three actual bears with tags in a wrapped present. The bear labels came from http://www.sweetdreamsquiltstudio.com/images/bear%20head%20outline.jpg

Once upon a time there was a girl named Sally. She had pretty gold locks in her hair so sometimes people called her Goldilocks. She just turned eight years old and for her birthday she got a gift from her grandma. Inside the box were three bears with tags, The first bear’s tag was “Bear His Name” The second bear’s tag was “Bear one another’s Burdens” and the third bear’s tag was “Bear testimony” “Bear one another’s Burdens”. She placed them on her shelf, slightly confused. Later that evening, she was reading scriptures and her family read, “Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine. That reminded her of the first bear she had received, “Bear His name”. (hold bear up)She exclaimed, “When I am baptized, I promise to be a disciple of Jesus and act like Jesus in all I do. Mom, I understand the first bear!”

The next day, she saw an elderly lady in her neighborhood that needed some help with her groceries because they were too heavy. She helped her and thought about the second bear’s tag.(hold bear up) “Bear one another’s burdens” She had helped the lady do something that was hard for her. “That’s it! I understand the second bear!” She would try and do more things that would help people because that is what Jesus would do if he were on the earth.

The next day she was on the playground and her friend asked if she wanted to go to her party on Saturday. She started to tell her that she was being baptized that day. Her friend asked her some questions and Sally thought about the third bear, “Bear Testimony”. (hold bear up) She told her friend that the church she was joining was true. She felt happy inside.

That evening the Bishop interviewed Sally and told her about the promises she would make when she was baptized.  They were the same promises on the bears that Grandma gave her.  She felt ready to be a member of God’s church.

The next morning, she got ready and was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was so happy and gave her grandma a huge hug. “Thank you Grandma, for helping me see the promises that I need to make to Heavenly Father at baptism.

We learned from the story that we make promises to Heavenly Father when we are baptized. What were the three bears or promises that Sally made in the story? (Bear His name, Bear One another’s burdens, and Bear our testimony)We make many promises to Heavenly Father as we journey through life and Heavenly Father promises us things back too. This two-way promise between us and Heavenly Father is called a covenant. (From Sharing time outline, May week 4) We are going to play a game that helps us discover some promises we make to Heavenly Father and what he promises back to us if we keep them.

Covenants BINGO. We are going to try and get four corners on this giant BINGO game.(Gospel art pictures make up the BINGO spaces on the chalkboard) The markers are bear clipart. Sample bear http://picturesforcoloring.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Teddy-bear-Coloring-Pages-05.gif We will pull a clue(scripture) out of this bag that will help us discover which covenant we make to Heavenly Father in our life. It will also help us discover what Heavenly Father promises back to us if we keep that promise.

Clue Scripture-Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” If we do this, the Lord promises to bless us, even to the point that we won’t be enough room for the blessing!

D&C 59:16 "Verily I say, that inasmuch as ye do this, the fulness of the earth is yours, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which climbeth upon the trees and walketh upon the earth;" If we promise to keep this, the Lord promises us all the things on the earth are ours for our benefit."
When we take the sacrament each week, we renew the covenants or two way promises with Heavenly Father.

Clue scripture- D&C88:3 "Wherefore, I now send upon you another Comforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples, as is recorded in the testimony of John." If we promise to do this(some of us already have), the Lord promises to send this Comforter, the Holy Ghost to be with us and help us choose the right.

I hope we will renew the covenants, two way promises that we have made with Heavenly Father every week, in the name of Jesus Christ amen.

  7. loved this. Thanks for the story. I actually put some gummy bears in a bag and stapled the 3 "bears" that we promise at baptism and on the other side the promises we make each week as we partake of the sacrament. We'll see how well it goes at primary tomorrow. Thanks again.

  14. This is adorable! I've never heard the three bears story like this before and it's such a clever idea. I think it will really help the kids to remember the principles taught. I also love the idea of the gummy bear handout. Thanks to each of you who make my job easier!

  15. I use your site so much and I have never said thank you! This time you really deserve it. The sharing time was a hit. I also used the idea of the gummy bear treats. After I bought the candy, I thought of Teddy Grahams, since two of our children don't eat sugar. I made about half candy and half grahams, and the grahams were the favorite. We give out treats very rarely, but the grahams were a healthy alternative.
