Scripture scholar worm

Scripture Scholar Worm
This idea was taken from a wonderful site called Beehives Messages. Here is the original link and thanks to her for the inspiration

Our Primary Presidency wanted to encourage the children to read the scriptures more diligently. So the Scripture Scholar worm seemed like a great way to help motivate the younger children to start or participate in a scripture reading program at home. The Junior Primary is given the Scripture worm(available for $5 on the oriental trading company website) http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.do?sku=38/44&requestURI=processProductsCatalog&cm_mmc=bv-_-38/44-_-38/44-_-38/44

The Junior Primary member is selected to take the scripture worm home with them and take care of him for the week. They are to invite the scripture worm to scripture study every day with their families and help him on his way to becoming a scripture scholar worm. The Junior member shares the worm with the Senior members in their family. The family chooses what scripture the worm liked that week, or a scripture story, and we have even had the worm come back with challenges to read the Book of Mormon before baptism, etc. I know, smart parents in our ward! The family signs their name on the worm and returns it the following Sunday. Then during opening exercises, the child tells briefly about their experience with the scripture worm and shares a favorite scripture or thought. We have done about 10 families and the kids are very eager for their turn to take care of the worm. It has been very successful and wasn't very costly.

Repentance Sharing time

The stairs are boxes of different sizes with tablecloths covering them.
This is Bearry. (have the children look for a second) Is there something the matter with Bearry? Yeah, he is covered in red spots. Hmmm. Can our primary help him with getting rid of these spots? Hey, maybe my sharing time will help.

3Nephi 27: 20 Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.

Bearry, as you are preparing to be baptized, have you done things wrong or sinned? (bear nods) Oh I see now, you have sinned and need to become worthy to be baptized and stay worthy to enter the holy temple!!!! You need to learn about repentance. Great I think our Primary can teach you and help you get rid of those spots.

Let’s teach him the steps of repentance first. The first step(put red spot next to first stair) is that realizing that you did something wrong. Have child put up the second step next to the stair. “I confess or tell what you did wrong to the person you did it to and promise not to do it again” #3- “I will right the wrong or try and fix it and apologize or say sorry to that person.” #4- Pray to Heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness or give a feeling that it’s okay. #5- Promise to be good(live commandments) and find joy #6- Forgive yourself and as it says in Mormon 9:6… “in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, fair and white, having cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, at that great and last day.” (Show picture of Christ's atonement), http://ldstalk.com/wp-content/images/mormon-jesus-christ/mormon-jesus-gethsemane.jpg Through Jesus Christ's suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, it made it possible for us to have these steps of repentence and be forgiven for the sins we make.

Let’s work on some of those spots. We will select a spot that has a sin that Bearry needs to repent of and try and help him be forgiven for that wrongdoing.

Have a child choose a spot to work on.  then pull the picture off the board that matches that spot and tell quick story of wrongdoing. Then go through the steps of repentance until clean and then remove the spot. Continue with other spots.

Temples throughout the Latter days Sharing time

Temples Throughout the Latter Days Sharing time

Pioneers have sacrificed much to help establish the church as we know it today. They followed the prophet as they were told to follow their faith, leave their homes, build temples and help build the kingdom of God. We are going to learn about some of the early temples and the sacrifices that were made in order to be able to recieve the blessings of the temple. We will move these Pioneer children and have them walk and walk and walk and learn about these temples. We will move on each space. On the back of each space, there is an evelope that has a fact about the temple they are traveling to. When we get to the temple, you will see a picture of what it looked like during the building and construction. Let's begin!

Kirtland temple facts in the envelopes- source- “Lesson 25: The Kirtland Temple Is Constructed,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),133

The Kirtland Temple is located in Kirtland, Ohio

The Kirtland Temple was the first temple built in this dispensation (D&C 88:119; 95). In this temple, Joseph Smith saw a vision of the celestial kingdom.

On 3 April 1836, the Savior appeared and accepted the temple as a place in which he would reveal his word to his people (D&C 110:1–10). Following this appearance, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received visits from Moses, Elias, and Elijah, all of whom gave them certain priesthood keys and important information (D&C 110:11–16), gave permission to do temple work.

Some said the temple should be built of logs. But Joseph Smith had a vision and saw how the temple should be built. The Saints crushed glass and chinaware into the stucco applied to the exterior walls of the Kirtland Temple, which glittered in the sun. During construction, the Kirtland Temple was guarded at night to protect the building from threatening mobs and people that wanted to hurt it.

This temple served the Saints for some two years before they had to flee Kirtland because of they were driven out. Temple marriages and Baptisms for the dead were not performed in this temple. This temple is owned now by the Community of Christ church.

Nauvoo temple facts in envelopes- source- "Lesson 35: The Nauvoo Temple Is Used for Sacred Ordinances," Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997)
“Lesson 33: The Saints Work to Build Nauvoo, the Beautiful,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),186

The Nauvoo temple was 55 feet taller than the Kirtland Temple. On the outside were carved figures of the sun, moon, and stars, representing the three degrees of glory. Over the doors in gold letters was written The House of the Lord, built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Commenced April 6th, 1841. Holiness to the Lord. The finished temple was one of the most beautiful buildings in the area.

Tithing money was used to pay for building materials, and members also paid whatever else they could to buy supplies. Women of the Relief Society each contributed a penny a week to buy glass and nails, eventually collecting fifty thousand pennies (five hundred dollars). These pennies weighed 343 pounds! Men contributed and labored their time building the temple. The women cooked meals and sewed clothing for the men building the temple.

Rooms in the Nauvoo temple were dedicated and used as soon as they were completed. Because the baptismal font was in the basement of the temple, it was ready for use before the rest of the temple was completed. Baptisms for the dead were begun in the temple in November 1841, when the outside walls of the temple had not yet reached the first-story windowsills. Almost six thousand members of the Church received their endowments in the Nauvoo Temple.

In September 1846 a mob of fifteen hundred enemies of the Church took over the temple and ruined it. They gambled, drank liquor, and smoked inside the temple. They destroyed the furnishings and walls and made fun of the sacred temple ordinances. Soon lightning struck the steeple and broke the shaft that held the figure of an angel on top of the temple. Later, enemies of the Church paid a man to set fire to the temple. Everything burned but the outside walls, which were made of stone. Two years later a tornado blew down three of the walls. The temple has now been restored and ordinances are done there.

Salt Lake City temple facts in the envelopes- source- “Lesson 44: The Salt Lake Temple Is Constructed and Dedicated,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),263
It took almost 40 years to build the Salt Lake City, Utah temple.

The huge granite blocks for the temple were cut at a quarry in a canyon twenty miles from the temple site. The blocks weighed several tons each and had to be transported in wagons pulled by ox teams. It sometimes took four days to get one block from the canyon to the temple site. Often the wagons would break down or the heavy blocks would fall off the wagons and crack or break. When the railroad came to Utah in 1869, and that made it easier to move many blocks during a day. Then the blocks were carved and shaped. (show picture of the stones cut from quarry and the oxen carrying the stone.(available on lds.org) Use "Don't break the ice" game blocks to help the kids visualize the difficulty of this temple's construction)
It took fourteen years to complete the bottom layer/foundation of the temple. They worked for five years and then had to almost start over because the foundation wasn’t strong enough and the temple might have cracked or fallen.

Cyrus Edwin Dallin is the artist of the angel Moroni on top of the Salt Lake temple .He was not a member of the church. It is a 12-foot-5-inch statue and most temples around the world have this symbol on top.(lds.org)

Houston temple facts in envelopes- source- (lds.org/newsroom)

Don Hand was the owner of the land that the temple is now built on. During a time when people were struggling and didn’t have enough money, he prayed to God that if he would help him not lose all his money, he promised he would pay Him back someday. The Lord wanted the temple built on Mr. Hand’s land, but Mr. Hand wasn’t interested in selling it. But when he was told that the reason for the land was to build a temple to the Lord, he remembered his promise and sold the land and even helped with the building construction of the temple.

Path leading to Jesus picture with children at the temple-

There are over 134 operating temples all around the world. How blessed we are to have one close by us.

(D&C 34:11–12).And verily, verily, I say unto you, I come quickly” (D&C 34:11–12). The Savior will come again to His temple.
He will come to the holy temple and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ amen.

Clothing Modesty Sharing Time

Clothing Modesty Sharing Time
Please see: "Modest Molly" Sharing time, I made changes to this lesson!
It's in August 2001 section of blog! or http://perglersprimaryplace.blogspot.com/2011/08/modest-molly-sharing-time.html
Quotes source: “For the Strength of Youth, p.14-15)

This is Molly. (drawn outline of person on the chalkboard. Molly has on a construction paper tank top and short shorts (magnet cards on back of clothes so they stick to board. She has blue spiky hair and magnet earrings all over her ears) Molly is a girl that likes to go to the park, the beach and goes to church too. Molly is confused about how to respect her body and dress it in a way that would make Heavenly Father happy. She has heard the scripture 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 before, “ Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you?... The temple is holy, which temple ye are” Could our Primary help her understand that our bodies are like this temple (show picture), pure, clean and modest/covered and we should always ask the question, “Would I wear this or look like this if Jesus stood beside me?”

Do you think we can help her?!!! Great, let’s help Molly! Well, first let’s start with the hair. The Prophet has told us in the “For the Strength of Youth” booklet that you may have seen before(show booklet) that we should not have extreme hairstyles. So I need a helper to be a hair stylist and transform the spiky blue hair into something that would be more pleasing to the Lord. (put blonde hairdo on Molly on the chalkboard.) Remember that the boys need also keep their hair groomed, cut and “missionary ready.” Now, what about all these earrings??? The prophet states that girls should have only one pair of pierced ears (one in each ear). So I need a helper to take all these other earrings off. And you will have to tell her brother Max that boys aren’t supposed to have any earrings. Now should Molly have me draw a tattoo or picture that is stained on her body. Start to draw with colored chalk. Oh wait, temples don’t have marking all over them and since our body is a temple… we shouldn’t mark our bodies either. Ok.. Molly, Got that! And tell your brother that the prophet has said no tattoos on boy’s bodies either!!

Ok now let’s take a look into Molly’s clothes dryers and see how we can teach her what exactly are modest clothes.  (Have a helper pull out the construction paper clothes that are literally hanging out of the dryer. (They are the modest version of the clothes that she is currently wearing on the blackboard. Her short jean short shorts and tank top need to change to sleeved t shirt and jean knee length shorts.
  • ÿ       Read quote on the back of the long shorts that is stuck on a dryer sheet.) Oh, there is a dryer sheet on the back, let’s see what it says… “Immodest clothing includes short shorts.”
  • ÿ       Read quote on the orange tank top, “Young women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders…”
  • ÿ       Read quote on back of the t shirt on dryer sheet “The way you dress is a reflection of what you are on the inside” (have helper change Molly’s clothes to modest clothes)
Do you think she is more prepared if the Savior stood beside her now? Modest Molly is now ready to go to the park. Let’s throw this outfit in the trash can (have a plastic trash can nearby)

Now Molly would like to go to a beach party. Can I get a helper to find her black swimming clothes out of the dryer? (have immodest two piece swim suit paper clipped together with the modest one piece swimsuit.) This is what Molly was going to wear to the party? Put the swimsuit on Molly. Hmmm… Would Molly wear this if the Savior stood beside her? Let’s look at the other option, Great!, there is a dryer sheet on the back with some help. (Read quote on back of the modest swimsuit) “Never lower your dress standards for any occasion” So even though many of Molly’s friends will be wearing this type (point to bikini) of swim suit, the prophet has told us that wearing clothes that show too much of the body (the tummy, etc.) isn’t making Heavenly Father happy. Let’s have a teacher come help Molly become Modest Molly at the beach party. Can I have a helper that will throw the inappropriate swim suit into the trash can?

Now, Molly is going to school. She needs her blue top and black pants. Can I have a helper find her blue top and black pants. (Have the two blue shirts and black pants paper clipped together) Have a helper put on the see thru blue top (made out of blue Saran wrap) and tight pants. Hmmm… do you think that Modest Molly should wear this see thru shirt and tight pants if the Savior stood beside her? Oh, there is a dryer sheet on this outfit that may be able to help her decide.

“Your body is God’s sacred creation” Your body is His gift to you. “Through your dress and appearance, you can show the Lord that you know how precious your body is.” If you can see through your shirt, is that a good way to thank him for your beautiful body? Would you wear that if the Savior stood beside you? Let’s put a blue shirt that covers Molly’s precious body and looser pants. Modest Molly is now showing respect for her body and is preparing her temple to enter the Holy temple. (Have a helper put on the modest school clothes and have another helper throw the see thru shirt and tight pants outfit in the trashcan) Molly’s brother Max needs to be careful of tight clothing too and see thru muscle shirts.

Next Molly is going to go to church. Can I have a helper find her green and yellow outfit that she was planning to wear? (Put on the green haltertop/midriff and miniskirt.) Ok, is she Modest Molly? Why not? (Let the kids discover what could be done to improve the outfit *check for understanding*) Yes, her skirt is too short and her top needs sleeves, and needs to cover her tummy. I think Modest Molly is starting to get the idea how to be more modest in dress. (Have a helper put the modest green blouse and the yellow long shirt on Molly) We should dress appropriate when we go to church and Modest Molly is ready to feel the spirit during the meetings. I need a helper to put the inappropriate outfit in the trash can. Molly should tell Max that he should also wear appropriate clothes at church too.

Now that Molly is Modest Molly, she is going to try and remember to cover her body with the clothes she wears. Oh it is almost Sunday and she didn’t wash her white and red dress. Can I get a helper to get it from by the washer and put it on Molly? Now Molly IS modest and the clothes cover her body, but is she ready to attend church. No, her dress is dirty and wrinkled very badly. The prophet has asked us to look our best at church, clean and without being sloppy with our clothing. Can I get a helper to get the pressed, clean dress from the dryer and let’s put it on Modest Molly so she can be well groomed to take the sacrament at church. Max will also need to remember to press church clothes on Saturday!

Thank you so much for teaching Molly how her body is like a holy temple and how she needs to always show that she is a follower of Jesus Christ. I hope you will all remember to and ask yourself if you would wear your outfit next to the Jesus before you put it on or buy it from the store. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Temple Ordinances/ Family Sharing time

Sharing time- I can go to the temple to recieve ordinances for my ancestors when I am older
October 2012 week 4 theme

                We learn from the song, "Families Can be Together Forever" that “The temple is a holy place where we are sealed together.” If we obey the Lord and make promises with Him in the temple, and as it says in the last part of D&C 132:46-… whatsoever you bind on earth, in my name and by my word, saith the Lord, it shall be eternally bound in the heavens;

So I have a family tree with branches by the dozen, I have grandmas… we are going to help the family on this family tree become a “forever family”. (huge tree with pictures on the branches) Our goal is to get each member to the temple, but there are sacred ordinances that need to happen before the family can be a forever family. An ordinance is a sacred act of God performed by the authority of the priesthood. We are going to learn about those ordinances that save a person in heaven and bind family members together.

Let’s start with the children on the tree. We are looking for Bobby. (Have child remove Bobby(primary picture 3-13 or http://store.lds.org/images/estore/products/eng/749_62018000_p_600.jpg) from the tree) Bobby just turned eight and is worthy to be baptized which is a saving ordinance. That means it HAS to happen to be a forever family. (Turn picture over to reveal picture of confirmation. ) Shortly after he is baptized, he is confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and receives the special gift of the Holy Ghost. When hands are laid upon his head and a priesthood blessing is said, that is a saving ordinance. Baptism and confirmation must happen for Bobby to be part of a forever family.(Put the Bobby picture on the rolling chalkboard on the far left.)

Next is his brother Sam. (Have child remove Sam(Primary picture 3-59 or http://www.lds.org/images/Manuals/tchg-pix.nfo:o:210.jpg) from the tree) Sam has just turned twelve and is ready to receive the ordinance of the first priesthood, the Aaronic priesthood. It is important because it will help him grow, learn, and prepare to receive the second priesthood, the Melchizedek priesthood. Of course, this is only for boys. (turn picture over to reveal picture of baptism for the dead font) or https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVGq-A5YdjLneaMiP_Ks-V44iGT8eQrTYxyztTR1aC3ceR6PsdG8T64Z0FzIdofAi4migqDQ0409PaUQJIM42fAp7ZNo_ucEnwSpEH9iRyOtC-vrsinxPCL1N4dDKxTBdbcXcpAYMthmj4/s1600/SLC+Temple+Baptismal+Font.jpg Upon turning twelve and receiving the Aaronic priesthood, Sam can now go to the temple and perform baptisms(similar to this one) but for those that are dead. Because remember, everyone needs to be baptized. Girls can go do temple baptisms at twelve too.(Put the Sam picture on the rolling chalkboard next to the Bobby picture and put a bow magnet between the two.)

Next is Edward. (Have child remove Edward from the tree(primary picture packet-3-69 or http://www.understandingmormonism.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/mormon_missionaries.jpg)  He is now 18 and feels ready to serve a mission for two years. Last General Conference young men were given the opportunity to serve at 18 years of age. Before going, he needs to have two saving ordinances happen. One is receiving the second priesthood, the Melchizedek Priesthood. This is a saving act of God that will let him give blessings to those that are sick and help people during hard times. This must happen for Edward to be part of a forever family. (turn picture over to reveal the Endowment room (taken from Temples, p.45)Then, if worthy, he will get to go to the temple and learn more and make more promises with Heavenly Father called the endowment (instruction course from God, “Heavenly Father’s school) This endowment is a saving ordinance and needs to happen before Edward can have a forever family.(Put the Edward picture on the rolling chalkboard next to the Sam picture and put a bow magnet between the two.)

Next is Mom and Dad. (Have child remove from the tree the Mom and Dad(Gospel Art picture 609 or http://ldsblogs.com/files/2008/12/mormon_marriage.jpg  They both joined the church as teenagers and learned the importance of being married in the temple and being sealed or bound together forever. (turn picture over to reveal a sealing room picture(Temples, p.10 or could use http://www.moroni10.com/LDS/Temple_Tour/SLC_Temple_Sealing_Room.jpg)They got married in the temple and were sealed across an alter, in a room like this. Being married in the temple is a saving ordinance and they knew it would mean that these children would be bound to them forever as a forever family. (Put the Mom and Dad picture on the rolling chalkboard next to the Edward picture and put a bow magnet between the two.)

The last is Grandma and Grandpa. (Have a child remove Grandma and Grandpa from the tree. I just used a clipart picture of an elderly couple) Grandma and Grandpa died before they were able to join to church. So for them to be part of the forever family, they need to receive the saving ordinances. Their living family members can go to the temple and perform the saving ordinances so they can be baptized, confirmed, Grandpa needs the Melchizedek priesthood and they need to be sealed in marriage. (turn picture over to reveal sealing room picture, (Temples, p.51 or https://www.lds.org/bc/content/ldsorg/content/images/StainedGlassSealingRoom.jpg) Put Grandpa and grandpa on the rolling chalkboard next to the Mom and Dad picture and put a bow magnet between the two.)
The family is bound like these ties are binding this family and they can be together forever through temple ordinances.

This is my family and I am thankful we will be sealed together forever and that I will see my grandparents again. From the Proclamation to the World “Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presense of God and for families to be united eternally.” I hope you will strive to go to the temple and work towards having a forever family. In the name of Jesus Christ amen.
