I Should Respect and Worship God Sharing time

Sharing time- I should Respect and Worship God

Sept. 2012 Week 2

The first four commandments Heavenly Father gave to Moses teach us that we should respect and worship God. (Taken from the “2102 Sharing time outline”, September week 2, p.18)  Today we are going to divide you into four groups. Each group will be given a puzzle that when completed will reveal one of those commandments. Using the scriptures as your guide, and with the help of your teacher, assemble the puzzle on the magnetic cookie sheet “tablet”(puzzle pieces have “business card” magnets on back of them).

When you are done discuss the commandment. We will assign one or two people from each group to briefly present some ideas to the rest of the Primary. There are some pictures, stories, and additional information for each group that you can use to help better understand the commandment. (I don't like to put teachers "on the spot" to conduct a discussion. They are welcome to use their own ideas.) Use the back of the cookie sheet “tablet” to attach any pictures (also with “business card” magnets) that you would like to share in your presentation.

Group 1-Exodus 20:3- “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

(On back of “Daniel and Lion’s Den picture, GAK, 117 or “There was a new king of Babylon. His name was Darius. King Darius chose men to help him. Daniel was their leader. The other men did not like Daniel. They did not want him to be their leader. The men knew Daniel prayed to God. They went to the king. They asked him to make a new law. The king made the new law. It said people could not pray to God. People who did not obey the law would be put in a lions’ den. The lions would eat them. The king knew Daniel must be put in the lions’ den. The king tried to think of a way to save him. But the law could not be changed. The king told his servants to put Daniel in the lions’ den. King Darius told Daniel God would save him.” Taken from Daniel put God first, even if it meant that he would face a scary lion’s den. Because Daniel worshipped only Heavenly Father, God protected Daniel and kept him safe. We too can be blessed and protected if we worship only ONE God.

(On back of “Council in Heaven picture,
The Father is the one true God. Nothing will ever change the relationship that we have with Him.Spiritually you are of noble birth, the offspring of the King of heaven… You are a child of God. He is the father of your spirit. He is the Father. He is God.  We revere our Father and our God; we worship Him. Just as all life follows the pattern of its parents, so can we grow toward the image of our Heavenly Father if we will live righteously and be obedient to His commandments.”  Taken from: Boyd K. Packer “Who is Heavenly Father?”

Group 2- Exodus 20:4- “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.”

(On the back of the large golden calf picture,
"Moses went into the mountains to talk with God. He was gone 40 days and 40 nights. Many elders including a man named Aaron were waiting for him. Some Israelites came to Aaron and said that they were tired of waiting for Moses to return. They wanted Aaron to make an idol for them to worship. They didn’t want to worship God. Aaron made a golden idol out of them shaped like a calf. The people worshipped the golden calf and made wicked sacrifices to it. Jesus was angry. He told Moses that some of the Israelites were doing wrong things and that the wicked must die. Moses came down the mountain with two large stones that Jesus had written the commandments with his finger. Moses saw the golden calf and was very angry. He threw the stones down and broke them. Moses threw the golden calf into the fire. Moses asked the righteous to come to him and be blessed. The wicked must die. Jesus told Moses to bring two new stones to the mountain and Jesus wrote the Ten Commandments on them." Developed from: Old Testament Stories, The Golden Calf, Chapter 20, p. 79-81  There are many “golden calves” today or false idols that people choose to worship instead of the true God. Money, Celebrities, Fame, Sports, Things, Power, etc. Taken from -"golden+calves"

(These false idols examples can be transcribed on several copies of this “golden calf” clipart from with magnets and added to the back of the magnetic cookie sheet “tablet”)

Group 3- Exodus 20:7- “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.”

(On the back of picture of President Hinckley as a boy picture taken from: November Friend, 2004, “Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice, 3
The taking of the Lord’s name in vain is a most serious matter.
When I was in the first grade, I experienced what I thought was a rather tough day at school. I came home, walked in the house, threw my book on the kitchen table, and let forth [some bad words] that included the name of the Lord.
My mother was shocked. She told me quietly, but firmly, how wrong I was. She told me that I could not have words of that kind coming out of my mouth. She led me by the hand into the bathroom, where she took from the shelf a clean washcloth, put it under the faucet, and then generously coated it with soap. She said, “We’ll have to wash out your mouth.” She told me to open it, and I did so reluctantly. Then she rubbed the soapy washcloth around my tongue and teeth. I rinsed and rinsed my mouth, but it was a long while before the soapy taste was gone. In fact, whenever I think of that experience, I can still taste the soap. I have tried to avoid using the name of the Lord in vain since that day. I am grateful for that lesson.” Nov 2004 Friend, “Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice, President Hinckley"name+in+vain"
What are some examples of ways of taking the Lord’s name in vain? (read from the below preassembled “Zip your Lip activity” Bad language, inappropriate stories or jokes, lies, cruel nicknames, bad music, lies, gossip, unkind words, mean teasing, etc. Taken from

Group 4- Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

(On the back of the meeting house picture) taken from
“After Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ created the heaven and earth in six days, They rested on the seventh day. They blessed the seventh day to be a holy day. It is a day to rest from our daily work and think about Them. We can show how much we love Them by doing good things on the Sabbath day. Attending church and taking the sacrament (show small picture of taking sacrament,) show Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that we love them and want to follow their teachings. At home we should keep the Sabbath day holy. It is a day to be with our families. (show small picture of family) We can listen to good music, play quiet games, or go for a walk with our families. Reading the scriptures(show small picture of scripture study), scripture stories, or the Friend is nice too. The Sabbath day is a good day to serve others. We might draw pictures or write letters to relatives, loved ones, missionaries, or people serving in the military. Visiting the sick(show small picture of elderly in hospital)… is another way to serve. Heavenly Father and Jesus have promised that if we keep the Sabbath day holy, we will be happier and receive many blessings in our lives.” “Doing Good on the Sabbath”, Julie Wardell.
