Prayer Sharing time

Sweet Hour of Prayer/ Anytime, Anywhere Prayer
August 2013 week 2 theme-
"Heavenly Father Wants Me to Pray to Him Often- Anytime, Anywhere"

Begin singing last part of first verse: Sweet Hour of Prayer, Hymn no. 142, "I’ll cast on him my ev’ry care
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
I’ll cast on him my ev’ry care
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
Doctrine and Covenants 23:6 says in part, "in the which you must pray vocally before the world as well as in secret, and in your family, and among your friends, and in all places. We are taught that we need to pray to our Heavenly Father often. But how often? We are going to learn that we can pray to our Heavenly Father anywhere, anytime, any sweet hour of the day. So I have a "sweet hour of prayer" clock here to help us. We will pass this bag around while listening/ singing the last lines of the hymn, "Sweet Hour of Prayer". When the piano stops, the person holding it will pick a number out and we will find out more of this sweet hour of prayer. Then we will match the number on the clock and discover the picture. Behind each picture is a colored happy face because when we pray it makes us happy inside. Some happy faces will have stories from the Friend, General Conference or my life that help us understand that we can pray to Heavenly Father anytime. We will get through as many sweet hours as we can.
(Child picks out a number. Have a helper move the boy's hand to the hour number that matched the card drawn. Girl hand always to points to Heavenly Father. Pull off the picture from the clock. Say, "We can pray (point to word pray)to Heavenly Father(point to Heavenly Father on the top of clock) through Jesus Christ(point to Jesus Christ at top of clock) at_________ (name place, example: at school)and show and then have a child find the matching "happy face picture" on the board. Read the story on back if there is one. Or go on to the next sweet hour.)

Sweet hours small pictures(sorry I don't have them all cited, they are from Friend magazines and Parents magazine ads that I cut preblog. Similar images would be easily found if you Google imaged "car", "school", "family eating", etc. )

We can pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ in our car. We can pray that we will be safe, pray that we don't have the car break down, or you know where our family does our morning prayer often. In our car before school"

Girl doing dishes angry (Friend magazine, November 2010, 8,9) (show small picture of angry boy) We can Pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ when we feel angry.(point to the "pray" wordstrip, Heavenly Father and Jesus)
Story from Nov 2010 Friend-Roxanne was asked to do more dishes than normal that night and she was angry and her brother was bugging her too. Her mom talked to her and suggested that they pray to Heavenly Father for help to take the bad feeling away.
Roxanne did want to help Mom. She knelt down by her bed. At first she didn’t feel like praying. Then she started telling Heavenly Father how she felt and asked Him to help her be happy again.
After her prayer, Roxanne felt better, walked in, and did the dishes happy.

Enos(Gospel art kit, 3-49-) (show small picture of girl eating the cookie)We can pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ when we make a bad choice.
Story from Friend, Mar 1990-One day Enos went hunting in the forest. As he thought about the teachings of his father, he wanted to be forgiven for his sins.Enos knelt and prayed to God. He prayed all day and was still praying when night came. God told Enos that, because of his faith in Jesus Christ, his sins were forgiven. Enos wanted the Lord to bless all the Nephites. He prayed for them, and the Lord said that he would bless them if they obeyed his commandments. And then he even prayed for his enemies the Lamanites. We can be forgiven for our sins or wrongdoings just like the prophet Enos was forgiven.

Look up picture(October 2003, Friend, p.18) (Show small picture of the road sign )and say, "We can pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ when we are lost and aren't sure if we can do something.
(match smile face with picture of girl looking up)
Tell story of Carl B. Cook from General Conference, Oct. 2011
Elder Cook at the end of my first week as a General Authority, my briefcase was overloaded and my mind was preoccupied with the question “How can I possibly do this?” He left the office of the Seventy and entered the elevator of the Church Administration Building. As the elevator descended, my head was down and I stared blankly at the floor.
The door opened and someone entered, but I didn’t look up. As the door closed, I heard someone ask, “What are you looking at down there?” I recognized that voice—it was President Thomas S. Monson.
I quickly looked up and responded, “Oh, nothing.” But President Monson could tell that he wasn't sure about his calling. He smiled and lovingly suggested, while pointing heavenward, “It is better to look up!” As we traveled down one more level, he said good bye again and reminded him, “Now, remember, it is better to look up.” We can pray for help and strength to do anything if we look up to Heavenly Father and pray.

Forgetting the notes picture- (March 2009, Friend, p.6) (show small picture of soccer game)We can pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ when we are at a soccer game, school play, primary program, etc.
This little girl was doing a piano recital and guess what, she couldn't remember what note came next. She prayed to Heavely Father for help right there. Didn't fold her arms, just said a silent prayer. And the note came to her and she finished her recital.

The Running Prayer(Friend, October 2007, p.47)  p. 47 of http://lds.org/churchmagazines/FR_2007_10_00___00670_000_000.pdf        (show small picture of family eating breakfast)We sit down at times to say prayers (breakfast table, etc), but listen to this story from the Friend. It's called "The Running Prayer" Nathan and his family were going to the park and he asked mom if she would make him a hard boiled egg to take with him to eat. She boiled water on the stove and put the egg in and then they hurried and got ready for the park. When they got there, Nathan was hungry and wanted his egg. But guess what? They had forgotten it and it was still boiling on the stove. They immediately ran home and Nathan decided that he could pray that the house would be safe as they were running. They got home and all was well. We can pray anytime, anywhere. It doesn't just have to be at special times.

Joseph Smith/Boy praying side by side( Friend, April 2010, p.16)- (show small picture of boy reading scriptures and primary teacher) We can pray to Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ to know that the scriptures and the church is true.
Let me read this poem in the Friend- A Boy Seeking Answers by Marianne Monson
Joseph sought his answer in a grove. I kneel by my bed. Joseph saw God the Father and Jesus Christ.
I listen to the whisper of the Holy Ghost. Joseph’s prayer began the restoration of the gospel.
My prayer taught me Joseph’s answer was true.We are two boys with two prayers
Answered by the same listening Father.
The same Heavenly Father will help us know what's true that answered the Prophet Joseph Smith.
I hope we will cast on Him our every care and wait for Thee. I know that we can pray to our Heavenly Father at any sweet hour of the day and he will listen, and help us be happy. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Missionary Suitcase Sharing Time

Sharing Time- Living the Gospel Helps me to be a Missionary Now
October 2013 Week 2
THIS IS NOT MY IDEA!!!! I got the lesson idea and picture from the following link.  I have made some alterations, but thought it worked perfectly with the theme for the week. Thanks to mormonmissionprep for the fabulous idea!

Heavenly Father wants the gospel to be preached in all the world and you can prepare now to be missionaries (From: October: The Mission of the Church Is to Invite All to Come unto Christ, 2010 Outline for Sharing Time.)
We are going to learn to prepare to be missionaries today in Primary. Oh, there is a suitcase here. Does this belong to anyone, anyone???? Let’s read the tag and find an owner. It says Elder Servant. Hmm… there is a note that says, “Permission to open” That means we can look inside. (act all excited) Hey maybe IT will help us learn how to be live the gospel and be a good missionary. I need a helper to come and get an item from Elder Servant's suitcase.

items in the suitcase:
  • A Frying Pan: This is a reminder that missionaries need to be able to cook for themselves. Young people can start now learning to cook by helping their mom or dad make dinner.
  • An Alarm Clock: Missionaries have a strict schedule they keep, including going to bed by 10:30 and being up by 6:30. An alarm clock is a must have. And young people can start now to learn to follow the Lord’s counsel. Hey, a Post it note is on the clock!! It says, D&C 88: 124, “retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated.”
·         A Missionary Badge: The missionary name tag symbolizes how missionaries are representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church. Young people can start now to learn to keep their baptismal and sacramental covenants to take upon them the name of Christ. Oh there is a Post it note on this item too!- from D&C 20:77”…that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.” Hey I have heard that in Sacrament meeting, a lot!!!!
  • A Piggy Bank: The LDS mission cost for young men and women in the United States is $400 a month which comes to about $10,000 for a two-year mission. It’s never too early for young people to start saving as much money as they can for their mission.

  • The Scriptures: Missionaries teach the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ from the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Hey there is a picture(pull out Ammon the Missionary picture), it's Ammon from the Book of Mormon. Remember, he was one of the sons of Mosiah that tried to destroy the church, had an angel appear, later repented and became great missionaries. Verse 2 of chapter 17 says,"Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.
But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God."
Young people can start now searching the scriptures like Ammon did. By doing so, they will be more familiar with the scriptures and they will be better prepared missionaries to teach with the power of God.
  • Shoes: Missionaries need to be prepared to walk…a lot. These shoes are a reminder to young people to stay healthy and strong and to keep the word or wisdom so they can, another Post it note!!, it says “run and not be weary… walk and not faint.” D&C 89:20
  • A Hymn Book: Missionaries sing hymns a lot of times at the beginning of discussions, in order to bring the Spirit. Young children can begin early to know and appreciate the hymns of the Church. Hey a bookmark! It says, D&C 25:12 “For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me.” So learn the hymns, children songs, develop musical talents, etc.
  • Painting of Jesus Christ: As missionaries “we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ… that our [investigators] may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” (2 Nephi 25:26) Missionaries must have a firm testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ and young people can begin to develop that now through scripture study, prayer, and participation in Church activities and telling others about Jesus or just following His example.
  • A Photo of the Temple: Missionaries baptize people in order to get them started on the strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life. One of the next major spiritual steps, one that brings even more joy to missionaries, is to see converts go to the temple to receive those ordinances. Young people can begin now to learn about the temple and set goals to go inside one day.
  • A Friend Magazine: Church magazines are a great resource for building faith and learning the gospel, which will aid in mission preparation. All young people should have access to read Church magazines.
  • Sewing Kit: How many people know how to sew a button if one falls off? That may be a skill that is useful on a mission because *whisper* you’re mom won’t be there to sew it back on for you!
  • Tithing slip: It is important to pay your tithing on all the money you earn and you can start obeying this commandment now. It doesn't have to be a lot, but 10% of what you earn goes to the Lord to help build the temples, churches in the land that you may serve a mission, Books of Mormon, etc.
  • Letter: A letter that says, "My Testimony" This must be Elder Servant's testimony of the things he knows are true. "I know that Heavenly Father loves us, that Jesus Christ is our Savior, that Joseph Smith brought back the true church and that we are led today by a living prophet, President Thomas S. Monson. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is true!!" Do we know the church is true and have a testimony like Elder Servant?
We would like to thank Elder Servant for sharing his suitcase and letting us peek inside. It looks like he is ready to be a Lord’s servant and be a great missionary. I hope it helped prepare you for a mission one day. D&C 109: 3 And now thou beholdest, O Lord, that thy servants have done according to thy commandment. I hope we will find ways to be His servants and preach the gospel, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers Sharing Time (Prayer with Pretzels Sharing Time)

Heavenly Father Hears and Answers my Prayers Sharing time
August 2013 Week 4

(Here is a link to the Pretzel Sharing Time game for the Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers sharing time (August 2013, week 4)

You can find a copy of the file named "Sharing time-Prayer with pretzels" (you have to fish through other lessons, sorry!) at my Skydrive: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=976904c8bfc9a79e&sc=documents&id=976904C8BFC9A79E%21105)

Or you can download the Word document for the lesson, game, and questions on sugardoodle http://c586449.r49.cf2.rackcdn.com/Sharing%20time-%20Prayer%20with%20pretzels.pdf There is a blank game board in case you wanted to insert your own review questions.)

(The game board could be enlarged for better viewing and real pretzels could be given at the end when the children reach the goal of earning "x" amount of pretzel points. ****You can find this download on Sugardoodle if you are having trouble getting the skydrive to work! Thanks Melanie!!! again, it is here- http://c586449.r49.cf2.rackcdn.com/Sharing%20time-%20Prayer%20with%20pretzels.pdf

Here is an example of enlarging the game board document using clipart from the internet and Friend resources. Just another option because my document isn't very large. Pretzel clipart came from http://sweetclipart.com/multisite/sweetclipart/files/pretzel_0.png

You can find a copy of the large game pieces(if you want to create your own game) named "Prayer pretzel LARGE" at my Skydrive: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=976904c8bfc9a79e&sc=documents&id=976904C8BFC9A79E%21105)

I modified this from an idea posted on http://www.sugardoodle.net/  Here is the reference:

"In about 610 A.D. a very creative Alpine Monk decided to make use of the pieces of dough left over from baking bread. The Monk formed them into thin strips folded into a looped twist to represent the folded arms of children in prayer.

This scrumptious treat was given to the children as they learned their prayers. They began calling the treat "Pretiola", which is Latin for "little reward". Soon it was known the world over as a pretzel.

The secret of making great pretzels is not only in the baking but also in the shaping. We, like pretzels, are made from the best ingredients, by the best hands available, the hands of our Father in Heaven.

Have you ever seen a broken pretzel, or one that's lost its shape? We too, can lose our shape when we don't pray always to keep our spirituality intact. Even in the midst of our greatest trials, we must remember, as did Job, to call on the Lord. The simple shape of the pretzel, arms folded in prayer, reminds us to pray each day. Our "Pretiola" or "little rewards" are the blessings we receive.

Every time you see a pretzel, remember prayer. Check to see if your arms are often folded in prayer and have not lost their shape."

So we are going to play a game that tests what you have learned this month about prayer. We are going to all play as one team. All of you are going to work together to help your team get further in the game. We may not have time to finish the entire game. We will roll a die. Your marker will move spaces on the gameboard and the spaces may have a direction, question, statement, or tell you to move forward or back. You will be collecting pretzels along the way. If you land on a pretzel, one primary child will be asked a question. On the question is a number. You will earn that many pretzels for the team by getting the question right. Our goal is earn 20 pretzels and there may be a reward! If you are told to move backward, you have to give a pretzel back for every space you move backward. Hopefully we can earn more than 20 pretzels!

I am actually going to have the children feed the paper pretzels (as questions are answered correctly) to "Prayerful Peter" that is at Primary to learn about prayer. I got him from http://www.picturesof.net/_images_300/A_Boy_with_a_Fork_In_His_Hand_and_a_Plate_Spaghetti_Royalty_Free_Clipart_Picture_110403-143431-229053.jpg or google "boy with a fork", it should come up(it does have some a light copyright logo that shows, but I cropped his arm off and blew him up to make him work. Then I attached him to a covered cereal box and cut out the mouth. Then attached a plate of clipart pretzels over the spaghetti from this site:(http://ginormasource.com/holidays/national-pretzel-day-april-26 ("Prayerful Peter" is also "Eddie Spaghetti used for slurping pasta and meatballs as children are singing, haha!) The end result looks something like this and the kids can feed him pretzels as they learn!

Here is the handout that I will be giving to the children. It is from http://spotgirl-hotcakes.blogspot.com/2010/01/sunday-school-resources.html

Modest Molly Sharing time

Modest Molly Sharing time-

This is Molly. Molly is a girl that likes to go to the park, the beach and goes to church too. Molly is confused about how to respect her body and dress it in a way that would make Heavenly Father happy. She has heard the scripture 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 before,  “ Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you?... The temple is holy, which temple ye are” Could our Primary help her understand that our bodies are like this temple (show picture), pure, clean and modest/covered and we should always ask the question, “Would I wear this or look like this if Jesus stood beside me?”

Do you think we can help her?!!! Great, let’s help Molly! Molly needs help deciding what clothes in the dryer should go in her closet and wear at different places. The prophet has given us this “Strength of Youth” booklet to help Molly understand how to wear clothes that are pleasing to the Lord.

So Molly wants to go to the park. Can a helper please get her orange shirt and jean shorts out of the dryer carefully. (The two options are clipped together) She isn’t sure which outfit she should hang in her closet and wear to the park. (Hang the two outfits on hangers and hold each outfit up to Molly as if she was choosing her clothes.) There is a dryer sheet on the back of them to help us decide which to hang in her closet.

Read quote on the orange tank top, from the Strength of Youth packet, “Young women should avoid ... shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back."
Read quote on back of the t shirt on dryer sheet “The way you dress is a reflection of what you are on the inside” “ Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts”

So how Molly dresses shows how she is inside. Is she pure and shows that she loves Jesus and wants to obey His words? So this outfit has sleeves and the shorts are longer (hold outfit up to Molly) and should we put this one in her closet? Good idea. (Hang out fit at the top of church chalkboard on the rungs that are at the top that slide) Let’s have a helper put this outfit in a pile of clothes that need to be tossed out. Now Molly is ready to go to the park. Molly’s brother Max also needs to remember to wear long shorts too.

Molly has been invited to go to a swimming party. Can a helper get the black swim suits out of the dryer. (hang both on the hangers and have a helper hold them up) Which one should we hang in Modest Molly’s closet for the party. There is a dryer sheet on the back with some more help. “The fashions of the world will change, but the Lord’s standards will not change.” So even though many of Molly’s friends will be wearing this type (point to bikini) of swim suit, the prophet has told us that wearing clothes that show too much of the body (the tummy, etc.) isn’t making Heavenly Father happy. (Hold the swim suits up to Molly) So which one should we add to Modest Molly’s closet? The one piece swimsuit, good idea! I need a helper to put the two piece swimsuit in the pile of clothes that need to be tossed away.

Now, Molly is getting ready to go to school. She needs her blue top and black pants. Can I have a helper find her blue top and black pants out of the dryer. (Hang the clothes up and hold them up to Molly.) Hmmm. Do you think that Modest Molly should wear this see thru shirt if the Savior stood beside her or this one? There is a dryer sheet on the back to help. “Immodest clothing is any clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner." “Through your dress and appearance, you can show the Lord that you know how precious your body is.” If you can see through your shirt, is it showing respect for your beautiful body and thanking Heavenly Father for your precious gift of a body? Let’s hang this outfit up in Modest Molly’s closet and I will need a helper to add this outfit to the pile of clothes on the floor. Molly’s brother Max needs to be careful of tight clothing too and see thru muscle shirts.

Next Molly is going to go to church. Can I have a helper find her green and yellow outfits to choose from? So Molly is looking for which outfit should be added to her closet. (Hang the outfits on the hangers and hold them up.) (Hold the outfits up to Molly.) So which outfit should be added to her closet? Why? Yes, this one has sleeves and the skirt is longer. We need to remember that skirts don’t have to go down to the ankles, but we should dress appropriate when we go to church so Modest Molly is ready to feel the spirit during the meetings. I need a helper to put the halter top and mini skirt in the pile of unwanted clothes.

Can I have a helper get the other Sunday dress out of the dryer and the one by the dryer that didn’t get washed? (hang the dress up) Molly needs to remember to wear modest clothes to church, but the prophet has asked us to look our best at church, clean and without being sloppy with our clothing. So Modest Molly needs to remember to wash her dress and take a bath and get clean. The temple is clean inside and we should keep our bodies clean too.

Thank you so much for teaching Molly how her body is like a holy temple and how she needs to always show that she is a follower of Jesus Christ. I hope you will all remember to and ask yourself if you would wear your outfit next to the Jesus before you put it on or buy it from the store. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Scripture scholar worm

Scripture Scholar Worm
This idea was taken from a wonderful site called Beehives Messages. Here is the original link and thanks to her for the inspiration

Our Primary Presidency wanted to encourage the children to read the scriptures more diligently. So the Scripture Scholar worm seemed like a great way to help motivate the younger children to start or participate in a scripture reading program at home. The Junior Primary is given the Scripture worm(available for $5 on the oriental trading company website) http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.do?sku=38/44&requestURI=processProductsCatalog&cm_mmc=bv-_-38/44-_-38/44-_-38/44

The Junior Primary member is selected to take the scripture worm home with them and take care of him for the week. They are to invite the scripture worm to scripture study every day with their families and help him on his way to becoming a scripture scholar worm. The Junior member shares the worm with the Senior members in their family. The family chooses what scripture the worm liked that week, or a scripture story, and we have even had the worm come back with challenges to read the Book of Mormon before baptism, etc. I know, smart parents in our ward! The family signs their name on the worm and returns it the following Sunday. Then during opening exercises, the child tells briefly about their experience with the scripture worm and shares a favorite scripture or thought. We have done about 10 families and the kids are very eager for their turn to take care of the worm. It has been very successful and wasn't very costly.

Repentance Sharing time

The stairs are boxes of different sizes with tablecloths covering them.
This is Bearry. (have the children look for a second) Is there something the matter with Bearry? Yeah, he is covered in red spots. Hmmm. Can our primary help him with getting rid of these spots? Hey, maybe my sharing time will help.

3Nephi 27: 20 Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.

Bearry, as you are preparing to be baptized, have you done things wrong or sinned? (bear nods) Oh I see now, you have sinned and need to become worthy to be baptized and stay worthy to enter the holy temple!!!! You need to learn about repentance. Great I think our Primary can teach you and help you get rid of those spots.

Let’s teach him the steps of repentance first. The first step(put red spot next to first stair) is that realizing that you did something wrong. Have child put up the second step next to the stair. “I confess or tell what you did wrong to the person you did it to and promise not to do it again” #3- “I will right the wrong or try and fix it and apologize or say sorry to that person.” #4- Pray to Heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness or give a feeling that it’s okay. #5- Promise to be good(live commandments) and find joy #6- Forgive yourself and as it says in Mormon 9:6… “in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, fair and white, having cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, at that great and last day.” (Show picture of Christ's atonement), http://ldstalk.com/wp-content/images/mormon-jesus-christ/mormon-jesus-gethsemane.jpg Through Jesus Christ's suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, it made it possible for us to have these steps of repentence and be forgiven for the sins we make.

Let’s work on some of those spots. We will select a spot that has a sin that Bearry needs to repent of and try and help him be forgiven for that wrongdoing.

Have a child choose a spot to work on.  then pull the picture off the board that matches that spot and tell quick story of wrongdoing. Then go through the steps of repentance until clean and then remove the spot. Continue with other spots.

#1- Cheating picture from Friend Sept. 2009,p.20 "The Cheating Lesson" by Britney Rule(Senior Primary)- Bearry was taking a test and decided to look at someone else’s paper because he wasn’t sure of the answers. So 1) Admit to self that you cheated 2)Tell Mom and teacher that you cheated 3) Take the lower grade as consequence 4)Pray to Heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness 5) Promise to never cheat again and follow commandment-Commandment- Thou shalt not steal.(other people's work) 6) You are forgiven through the atonement of Jesus Christ

#2- Stealingfrom Friend Nov 2010 "Toys for Tim" by Suzanne Gale-
http://lds.org/churchmagazines/FR_2010_11_00___09271_000_000.pdf     pg 4
Tony was selling toys for a sick friend.  Bearry really wanted this doll, so he took it when Tony wasn’t looking and was taking money from someone else. 1.) Temples throughout the Latter days Sharing time

Temples Throughout the Latter Days Sharing time

Pioneers have sacrificed much to help establish the church as we know it today. They followed the prophet as they were told to follow their faith, leave their homes, build temples and help build the kingdom of God. We are going to learn about some of the early temples and the sacrifices that were made in order to be able to recieve the blessings of the temple. We will move these Pioneer children and have them walk and walk and walk and learn about these temples. We will move on each space. On the back of each space, there is an evelope that has a fact about the temple they are traveling to. When we get to the temple, you will see a picture of what it looked like during the building and construction. Let's begin!

The Kirtland Temple is located in Kirtland, Ohio

The Kirtland Temple was the first temple built in this dispensation (D&C 88:119; 95). In this temple, Joseph Smith saw a vision of the celestial kingdom.

On 3 April 1836, the Savior appeared and accepted the temple as a place in which he would reveal his word to his people (D&C 110:1–10). Following this appearance, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received visits from Moses, Elias, and Elijah, all of whom gave them certain priesthood keys and important information (D&C 110:11–16), gave permission to do temple work.

Some said the temple should be built of logs. But Joseph Smith had a vision and saw how the temple should be built. The Saints crushed glass and chinaware into the stucco applied to the exterior walls of the Kirtland Temple, which glittered in the sun. During construction, the Kirtland Temple was guarded at night to protect the building from threatening mobs and people that wanted to hurt it.

This temple served the Saints for some two years before they had to flee Kirtland because of they were driven out. Temple marriages and Baptisms for the dead were not performed in this temple. This temple is owned now by the Community of Christ church.

Nauvoo temple facts in envelopes- source- "Lesson 35: The Nauvoo Temple Is Used for Sacred Ordinances," Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997)
“Lesson 33: The Saints Work to Build Nauvoo, the Beautiful,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),186

The Nauvoo temple was 55 feet taller than the Kirtland Temple. On the outside were carved figures of the sun, moon, and stars, representing the three degrees of glory. Over the doors in gold letters was written The House of the Lord, built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Commenced April 6th, 1841. Holiness to the Lord. The finished temple was one of the most beautiful buildings in the area.

Tithing money was used to pay for building materials, and members also paid whatever else they could to buy supplies. Women of the Relief Society each contributed a penny a week to buy glass and nails, eventually collecting fifty thousand pennies (five hundred dollars). These pennies weighed 343 pounds! Men contributed and labored their time building the temple. The women cooked meals and sewed clothing for the men building the temple.

Rooms in the Nauvoo temple were dedicated and used as soon as they were completed. Because the baptismal font was in the basement of the temple, it was ready for use before the rest of the temple was completed. Baptisms for the dead were begun in the temple in November 1841, when the outside walls of the temple had not yet reached the first-story windowsills. Almost six thousand members of the Church received their endowments in the Nauvoo Temple.

In September 1846 a mob of fifteen hundred enemies of the Church took over the temple and ruined it. They gambled, drank liquor, and smoked inside the temple. They destroyed the furnishings and walls and made fun of the sacred temple ordinances. Soon lightning struck the steeple and broke the shaft that held the figure of an angel on top of the temple. Later, enemies of the Church paid a man to set fire to the temple. Everything burned but the outside walls, which were made of stone. Two years later a tornado blew down three of the walls. The temple has now been restored and ordinances are done there.

Salt Lake City temple facts in the envelopes- source- “Lesson 44: The Salt Lake Temple Is Constructed and Dedicated,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),263
It took almost 40 years to build the Salt Lake City, Utah temple.

The huge granite blocks for the temple were cut at a quarry in a canyon twenty miles from the temple site. The blocks weighed several tons each and had to be transported in wagons pulled by ox teams. It sometimes took four days to get one block from the canyon to the temple site. Often the wagons would break down or the heavy blocks would fall off the wagons and crack or break. When the railroad came to Utah in 1869, and that made it easier to move many blocks during a day. Then the blocks were carved and shaped. (show picture of the stones cut from quarry and the oxen carrying the stone.(available on lds.org) Use "Don't break the ice" game blocks to help the kids visualize the difficulty of this temple's construction)
It took fourteen years to complete the bottom layer/foundation of the temple. They worked for five years and then had to almost start over because the foundation wasn’t strong enough and the temple might have cracked or fallen.

Cyrus Edwin Dallin is the artist of the angel Moroni on top of the Salt Lake temple .He was not a member of the church. It is a 12-foot-5-inch statue and most temples around the world have this symbol on top.(lds.org)

Houston temple facts in envelopes- source- (lds.org/newsroom)

Don Hand was the owner of the land that the temple is now built on. During a time when people were struggling and didn’t have enough money, he prayed to God that if he would help him not lose all his money, he promised he would pay Him back someday. The Lord wanted the temple built on Mr. Hand’s land, but Mr. Hand wasn’t interested in selling it. But when he was told that the reason for the land was to build a temple to the Lord, he remembered his promise and sold the land and even helped with the building construction of the temple.
